On June 20, 2017, the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Canada Werner Wnendt and his wife Eleonore Wnendt-Juber hosted a ceremony at the German Residence honouring the Algonquin First Nations Peoples, for thousands of years owners of the land on which the building sits.

On June 15, 2017, a documentary about José Arturo Castellanos, Consul General of El Salvador in Geneva during WWII who saved thousands of Jewish lives by granting them Salvadoran nationality, was screened at the residence of the German Ambassador. The directors of the film performed the soundtrack live accompanied by a six-piece Latin orchestra.

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany Werner Wnendt honoured this year’s recipient of the Konrad Adenauer Research Award, Prof. Dr. Walid Saleh from the University of Toronto, with a ceremony in the Ambassador’s residence on June 19, 2017. The award is one of Germany’s most prestigious research awards and is conferred annually by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Rainy day didn't dampen support for Cornerstone Housing for Women at Ambassador's residence
Cornerstone Housing for Women provides emergency shelter and safe affordable permanent housing for women in Ottawa. On June 4, 2017, the organization's annual Garden Party & Fashion Show was hosted at the residence of German Ambassador Werner Wnendt. Helping out as emcee was CBC Ottawa news anchor Lucy van Oldenbarneveld, while Daytime Ottawa host Julie Beun narrated the fashion show. Professional singer Deborah Davis not only modelled but also closed the show.

In an interview with Canadian Press journalist Mike Blanchfield on February 8, 2017, Ambassador of Germany to Canada Werner Wnendt expressed his belief that in the current context, Canada has become an even more relevant partner to Germany. “Whether it’s Ukraine or Syria or the fight against ISIS, it’s fair to say our countries share a lot of positions.”
The German Embassy in Ottawa was proud to partner again with Rideau Hall during the 2017 edition of the Governor General's Winter Celebration. Over 8,000 guests attended the event on January 28 and well over a thousand came to taste traditional German sausages with sauerkraut and to warm up with a cup of hot mulled wine or apple cider at the GermanyInCanada tent in the Embassy Village.

On June 17, 1991, the Treaty of Good Neighbourship was signed by Poland and Germany. Over the past 25 years, German-Polish relations have developed across a very broad spectrum. Today, Germany and Poland enjoy close and friendly relations at all levels and in all areas of society. Opening of exhibition "The Cold War: Causes – History – Impact"
June 14, 2016, German Ambassador Werner Wnendt joined Henriette Riegel, Executive Director of Canada's Cold War Museum the Diefenbunker, and about 100 visitors at the opening of the new exhibition "The Cold War: Causes – History – Impact." Produced by the Berlin Centre for Cold War Studies and the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship, the exhibit examines the ideological, political, military, and economic causes of the Cold War from a global perspective. The Diefenbunker is the first venue to host the exhibition outside of Berlin.

German Embassy supports UN project on adequate housing
During a formal signing ceremony at the German Embassy in Ottawa on May 26, 2016, the Ottawa-based United Nations Special Rapporteur on adequate housing Leilani Farha was awarded a grant in the amount of €60,000 from the human rights fund of Germany's Federal Foreign Office. The money will go toward the project "Advancing the right to adequate housing”.

The Ambassador's residence became the stage for Honens Prize Laureate Pavel Kolesnikov on May 3, 2016. The young Russian pianist has played at famous places such as Berlin’s Konzerthaus, the Louvre (Paris), Vancouver Recital Society, Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival, Banff Summer Festival, and the United Kingdom’s Plush Music Festival.

Winterlude is Canada's largest winter festival and it takes place in Canada's capital city, Ottawa. Over 600,000 people visit the Capital at this time of year with many festivities taking place throughout the city that celebrate Winter. The General Secretary of the Christian Democratic Party (CDU, which currently holds power in Germany) Peter Tauber, is visiting Ottawa from March 31 to April 2, 2015. Mr. Tauber is examining Canada's immigration system to determine if some of its elements could be applied to Germany. He is also taking stock of the negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) between Canada and the EU.

On February 13, 1990, when Ottawa was bitterly cold and covered deeply in snow, German Foreign Minister Genscher invited his Western counterparts to a breakfast at the German Embassy in Ottawa. Little did he know that this would trigger a chain of events that would eventually lead to the Two Plus Four Agreement, pivotal to German reunification.

On February 19, 2014, the Berlin-class replenishment vessel FGS Bonn arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia for a seven-day visit. From February 9 to 11, 2014 Georg Milbradt, Chairman of the Board of the Forum of Federations and former Minister-President of the German Federal State of Saxony, visited Ottawa. He met with high-ranking Canadian officials, including Foreign Minister John Baird and Speaker of the House of Commons Andrew Scheer, and gave two lectures.

On February 15, 2014, the German Embassy and the organizers of House of PainT, Ottawa's biggest annual urban arts festival, invited the public to a trailblazing transatlantic graffiti jam. The audience had the chance to watch Canadian and German artists create murals commemorating the 25th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

The event "Germany's THW: A new direction for disaster response?" on November 19, 2013 at the residence of the Ambassador of Germany to Canada, Werner Wnendt, was well attended by senior stakeholders from federal and municipal governments as well as first responders from police, fire and paramedic services.
During a ceremony commemorating November 11 in Ottawa at the National War Memorial, the Ambassadors of France and Germany laid together a wreath of flowers at the monument. This act symbolizes the Franco-German reconciliation and the wish for a peaceful, united and strong Europe.

This one day seminar at Carleton University (Ottawa) on October 29 focused on energy transitions and sustainability, examining the challenges associated with the transformation of energy systems based on the recent experiences in ‘front runner’ jurisdictions. The highlight of the seminar were presentations by two leading German researchers on the latest developments in the energy transition underway in Germany: Dr. Michael Sterner and Michael Mehling.

Frank Horch, Senator for Economy, Transport and Innovation of the city of Hamburg visited Montreal and Ottawa from October 23 to 26, 2013. On October 25, the Senator and his delegation had meetings in Ottawa with representatives of Transport Canada, Industry Canada, Speaker of the Senate Noël Kinsella, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of International Trade Erin O'Toole and MP Ed Holder.
Isabelle Cottet is not only a pianist of the highest calibre (she has been winning major international piano competitions since the age of eleven) but a perfect example of how close the partnership between France and Germany has grown over the last five decades. Ms. Cottet feels at home in the capitals of both countries: born in Paris, she completed her higher musical education at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris as well as the Universität der Künste in Berlin.

On Friday, October 18, 2013, the doors of the Goethe-Institut Toronto were wide open again. The tantalizing theme this year was “A Taste of Germany.” Visitors were invited to enjoy German food and jazz music with acclaimed Canadian jazz artist Adi Braun accompanied by David Restivo on piano.

From June 30 to July 5, 2013, members of the federal executive board of the Junge Union Deutschlands ("Young Union" of Germany), the joint youth organisation of the two conservative German political parties CDU and CSU, were visiting Toronto and Ottawa. Germany's national team played a friendly game against the Carleton University Ravens on March 31 to a full audience, which included many young girl hockey players from Eastern Ontario. On February 7, 2013, on the eve of his 85th birthday, George Brady, whose sister Hana's touching story has become known worldwide through the eponymous book and film “Hana's Suitcase,” received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, handed to him by Ambassador Werner Wnendt on behalf of Federal President Joachim Gauck and the Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Germany's Parliament, Hans Ulrich Klose.

The 2012 European Union Film Festival at Library and Archives Canada took place from November 15 until December 2. Founded in 1984, it is an annual showcase of the best of contemporary cinema produced in the European Union. Germany's official selection, "Home for the Weekend" (Was bleibt) was greeted by a full audience.

1,400 international parliamentarians, including the Speaker of Germany's Parliament Norbert Lammert, gathered in Quebec October 21-26, 2012 for the 127th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). To mark Canada's 100 years' membership in the organization, the assembly was hosted by the Speaker of the Senate Noël A. Kinsella and the Speaker of the House of Commons Andrew Scheer. Its main theme was the role of parliaments in addressing the challenges of citizenship, identity, and linguistic and cultural diversity in a globalized world.

Out of 403 applications from 69 countries, an expert jury selected this year's 25 "Green Talents." They were invited by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research to take part in the Green Talents Forum, a tour across Germany from October 10 to 23, 2012. Among them a winner from Canada: Sabaa Ahmad Khan, PhD student at McGill University in International Sustainable Development Law.

Bicycling in cities is booming, for many reasons: health and environmental benefits, time and cost savings, more and better bike lanes and paths, innovative bike sharing programs, and the sheer fun of riding. German transportation expert Ralph Buehler reports on cycling trends and policies in cities throughout North America and Europe. At the invitation of the German Embassy, he visited Ottawa between October 16 and 19, 2012, where he gave several presentations and met with a number of city planners and other key decision makers.

In 2000, Ontario was the first province to officially recognize the contribution Canadians of German ancestry have made to the province by proclaiming "the day following Thanksgiving Day in each year" German Pioneers' Day.
