He has brought a depth of imagination to works by John Hollenbeck, Mark Dresser, Jim Black and Chris Speed, as well on his own recordings. Joined by bassist Robert Landfermann and drummer Christian Lillinger in grünen (“the greening”), Kaufmann turns the piano trio tradition on its ear, creating a true cooperative group where each member is free to use their own range of techniques and musical vocabularies. To establish its mandate in 2009, the group recorded its first album with no prior rehearsal or design; true free improvisation. For its second album, 2014’s Pith and Twig, the trio mixed some through-composed elements with its spontaneous approach, but its music retains its adventurous spirit—an open-ended environment where anyone can take the lead, lay out or solo, completely in the moment.
